Our member of the month for February is Rose Olsen. She has been a teacher for 24 years, has 3 teenage daughters, and is a self-proclaimed workaholic. Rose had fallen into ruts on and off over the last 24 years, often putting the needs of others before her own. As her three daughters have grown and become 3 sport athletes, she found herself being a spectator much of the time and becoming more and more sedentary. She did not like that feeling.
In December of 2017, Rose had a hysterectomy. She gained 10 pounds in 6 months post surgery and felt tired, heavy, and down on herself. She has always enjoyed sports and being active and exercising, especially group exercise classes. Over the years, life seemed to keep interrupting her fitness momentum, namely trying to keep up with her daughters’ sports obligations, family life, and her career.
Having gained the 10 pounds, in addition to her cholesterol and blood pressure slowly creeping up, she was ready to recommit herself to a healthier lifestyle. Her first goal was to lose those 10 pounds.
Rose had tried many things over the years prior to coming to SNW Fitness including many different gyms – both big and small, Weight Watchers, Beachbody, Herbalife, – she said, “you name it, I’ve tried it.”
She had heard about SNW Fitness after seeing posts on Facebook and knew Heather from a previous gym. When she learned that Heather was the owner, she knew she would like it. Rose began with a two-week free trial.
Rose found that she really liked the trainers and instructors saying that they are friendly, supportive, and real. She loved the instant feeling of belonging and also found that she knew a few ladies who were already members.
Rose has overcome many obstacles since she recommitted herself to her health and fitness. She has learned to deal with her stress eating in other ways and allows herself to be okay with taking care of herself before taking care of other responsibilities. Rose has also learned to cook and eat healthier foods and monitors her dietary intake using MyFitnessPal.
One of Rose’s most proud moments was when she had the most exercise points during one of the challenges last summer at SNW Fitness. She is also proud of her consistency with coming to the 5:00 am classes. Because of all this, she has lost the 10 pounds, which was her initial goal, gained muscle, and is much more tone. Rose stated that she also has more energy, mental clarity, and a more positive outlook. She said she doesn’t get stressed about things as much as before.
Her view of herself has changed for the better. She is proud of her hard work and dedication, her newly found energy, and feels much stronger. Rose is determined to not get stuck in a rut again. She says that if she keeps surrounding herself with the positive people at SNW Fitness, she will be able to stay focused and supported. She said that had she not taken action, she would probably still be feeling sluggish, depressed, worried, and overwhelmed.
If she could say anything to anyone who might be dealing with similar challenges it would be, “You have to be okay with putting yourself first. You can’t take care of others until you take care of yourself. Surround yourself with people who are going to support you and lift you up. You will definitely find that at SNW. Take every opportunity to educate yourself and make use of all the tools available.”
Rose has made great strides with her health and fitness. She is less stressed, feels much better, and her quality of life has improved significantly. This has ultimately spread to every other aspect of her life. Rose has found in order for you to be your best self, you have to take care of yourself first. This is so you can take care of everything else that life throws your way.
