I stumbled into the fitness industry completely unintentionally. For years I hated the way I felt, and didn’t like the way I looked. My family history of heart disease and diabetes would become an issue for me if I didn’t do something. I already had high cholesterol and my blood pressure was higher than it should have been. I had been overeating, sneaking food, and bingeing for years. I had tried doing exercise videos at home, but quickly lost interest in them after a few months. Chronic lower back pain and swollen ankles were a normal part of life. I spent my spare time playing games on the internet and watching TV for hours after work. I had come to the conclusion that I would always be overweight.
One day, in early January 2013, I saw a listing for a Zumba class taught by Heather David. I knew what Zumba was, and I had always liked to dance when I was younger, so I decided to sign up, keeping in mind that if I didn’t like it I wouldn’t ever have to do it again. I ended up absolutely loving it, so much, in fact, that I found another instructor in town that taught it. This way I could go four times a week instead of two! I loved that working out could be so much fun that I could actually forget I was working out. Just by doing Zumba, I was able to lose my first 30 pounds! Later on that year, Heather started offering Zumba through Shoreline Natural Wellness & Fitness, so I signed up for a membership for unlimited classes. This gave me the opportunity to try other workouts. I started lifting weights and I tried other cardio classes. The number on the scale dropped even lower. I felt like I was truly enjoying life for the first time in years.
All of this newfound physical activity was wonderful, but I was still eating unhealthy foods on a regular basis, and I was still bingeing. I knew the source of my food issues because I had gone through a twelve-step program (twice!) several years before, but my behavior hadn’t changed much since then. I knew I had to address the problem soon. I even remember sitting in my car one day when a Shoreline brochure fell out of my passenger side visor and landed on the floor next to a McDonald’s bag from a few days before. (True story! I believe that God has a sense of humor, and this was His way of letting me know that more changes were needed.) I started eating more fruits and vegetables, and less junk food, and the number on the scale got even lower. I don’t always eat perfectly, but I try to make good choices most of the time.
I’ve celebrated many small victories along the way. I can climb stairs without getting winded. I can get up off of the floor with minimal effort. I can bend forward to tie my shoes without losing my breath. I can get a seat belt on without struggling. I’ve enjoyed buying smaller clothes when I’ve shrunk to the point that everything was way too big on me. I can truly say this is the best I’ve ever felt in my entire life! I’m so much more confident and my self-esteem is much higher than before. My outlook on life is more positive. I feel like there are so many more possibilities than before. I have more energy. My blood pressure is within a healthy range and my cholesterol is low enough that my doctor said I don’t need to take my medication for it anymore. My back pain is much better and my ankles don’t swell anymore. I’m much more active, and I’ve discovered I enjoy hiking and taking walks. I’ve tried windsurfing. After years of avoiding the beach, I started going again. I’ve stepped back from a few negative relationships, but amazing and wonderful new ones have come into my life. Some people have told me that watching my transformation inspires them to want to do the same. I tell people that if I can do this, they can too. By the grace of God, I have been able to accomplish things that I never thought were possible.
After Heather “worked on me” for close to a year, and I overcame some confidence issues, I started teaching Zumba in March 2015, and on April 23, 2016 I passed the exam to become a certified personal trainer! I loved this studio when I was a member, and I love it even more now that I am teaching group classes and working one-on-one with clients. I am very passionate about helping people live healthy, active, and creative lives, and to be the best, healthiest versions of themselves. I’m very blessed and grateful to be a part of this amazing team!
